Who are SEND
Butterflies South Coast?

We are a community group supporting parent carers of individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The group is run by neurodivergent volunteers with lived experience as parent carers and an understanding of the challenges faced by those who have additional needs.

Paula - I have been running parent carer support groups for nearly 10 years. I am a single parent with two disabled children and have disabilities myself. My children have both been in mainstream and specialist provision. In trying to support my children, I found there was a lack of support, so I discussed with some friends about setting up a group. Over the years, people have come and gone, but now 4 of us run SBSC covering a larger area.

Michaela - I have been involved with parent support for a number of years. More recently, four of us formed SBSC to broaden and improve what we can offer to others. I have a neurodivergent son who was in mainstream for most of his education but recently moved to specialist provision, which has proved to be the right decision. I battled through two SEND Tribunals to get him the support needed. I want to help others in the same position to have a voice and understand how to access the right support. Thanks to my job roles I have experience of education as well as EHCPs and Annual Reviews.

Danielle - I'm a single mum of two, who both have various needs, and I'm a late-diagnosed autistic with ADHD. I've been involved in parent carer support since 2017 and know all too well what it feels like to be in a hole and no matter how hard you try, it just feels like it is not good enough, that no one listens to you or your child. That's why I'm part of SBSC, because I don't want anyone to feel like I did.

Sharlene - I have been supporting parents for several years via groups like SBSC as well as Portsmouth Parent Board. I am a boxing coach and I have first aid and safeguarding certificates. I have four children, two of them are in mainstream and two are in alternative provision. I have lots of experience in SEND as well as adult supported living. I am happy to chat and help others, supporting them emotionally on their journey
